Community violence has plagued Black and Brown communities across America for far too long, fueled by systemic racism, disinvestment, and inequality. The devastating impact is most visible among young Black males aged 10-24, whose gun violence rates are shockingly 21.6 times higher than those of their White counterparts. This violence, predominantly occurring among a small group of socially connected individuals, tears apart families, robs neighborhoods of hope, and perpetuates cycles of trauma and retaliation.
The CVI Action Plan is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to reverse this tragic cycle by focusing on near-term solutions that save lives today while building a foundation for long-term change. Shaped by the voices of over 300 leaders and practitioners in the community violence intervention (CVI) field, the plan represents one of the most comprehensive and coordinated efforts to strengthen and support the CVI landscape to date.
A Community-Led Vision for a Safer Future
Over a twelve-month period, CVI leaders from across the country engaged in in-depth discussions, roundtable sessions, and interviews, sharing their insights, experiences, and hopes for the future. This collaborative process, led by a team of dedicated coordinators and experts, resulted in a community-driven vision that sets ambitious goals and outlines essential strategies to tackle the root causes of violence.
The CVI Action Plan is not just another policy document; it is a call to action. It represents a collective effort to shift America’s public safety strategy away from enforcement-based approaches that have harmed Black and Brown communities and towards recognizing violence as a public health crisis. By centering CVI as a key pillar of the public safety ecosystem, we can begin to heal the wounds of our communities and build a safer, more equitable future.
